I don't usually update entries for manga here (there's another more suitable platform)。 Moreover, it has been YEARS since I completed this series, but I can't help to add it into my Goodreads bookshelf, solely for a reason: Fullmetal Alchemist is one of my all-time favorite manga (if not the most)。 I don't usually update entries for manga here (there's another more suitable platform)。 Moreover, it has been YEARS since I completed this series, but I can't help to add it into my Goodreads bookshelf, solely for a reason: Fullmetal Alchemist is one of my all-time favorite manga (if not the most)。 。。。more

Read these all when I was a kid - not really sure of the year。 Friggin' loved them。 These books were such an important part of my childhood。 To this day I still love old timey trains (because of these books and the later shows and movies - watched brotherhood and the original)。 Just classic, and in my opinion, probably the best manga ever。 I don't think anything will give me the nostalgia chills faster than hearing any of the intros/outros to the anime。 Read these all when I was a kid - not really sure of the year。 Friggin' loved them。 These books were such an important part of my childhood。 To this day I still love old timey trains (because of these books and the later shows and movies - watched brotherhood and the original)。 Just classic, and in my opinion, probably the best manga ever。 I don't think anything will give me the nostalgia chills faster than hearing any of the intros/outros to the anime。 。。。more

This is going to be a long review / spoiler-free analysis, so here's a quick summary of what I want to say: This is a masterpiece。Fullmetal Alchemist is among those rare narratives that perfectly balance deep philosophical themes with an entertaining story thanks to its gripping plot, compelling characters, imaginative worldbuilding and intelligent thematic explorations。 All of these narrative elements work together amazingly well because they`re used to their utmost potential, especially the ma This is going to be a long review / spoiler-free analysis, so here's a quick summary of what I want to say: This is a masterpiece。Fullmetal Alchemist is among those rare narratives that perfectly balance deep philosophical themes with an entertaining story thanks to its gripping plot, compelling characters, imaginative worldbuilding and intelligent thematic explorations。 All of these narrative elements work together amazingly well because they`re used to their utmost potential, especially the magic system of alchemy, which is connected intricately to almost every fundamental piece of the story。 This manga thus has one of the most clever uses of magic systems I've ever read in a work of fantasy。 In the world of Fullemtal Alchemist, alchemy, inspired by the real-world historical practice, is considered a scientific pursuit based on the comprehension, deconstruction and reconstruction of material, with the ultimate goal of pursuing truth itself。 Through alchemy's links with the military government, Arakawa explores the themes of war and genocide, power and authority, science vs religion, while subtly crticizing a purely transactional, materialistic world view in which science can easily be weaponized, and human life can be used as a resource like any other, consumed in any form political systems see fit to enhance their power。 Such ambitious themes never feel heavy-handed, since they`re explored through the perspectives of the characters, who feel as nuanced as real people。 It's because even the side characters have interesting motivations and flaws that arise naturally from their circumstances and colorful personalities。 Their motivations allow them to actively change the course of the plot, which is such an effective way of showing how much agency these characters have despite the powerful antagonistic forces that undermine their sense of worth and abilities at every opportunity。 The conflict between the antagonists and the main characters is directly linked with another core theme of the narrative: the nature of truth and humanity。 The main cast of antagonists all consider themselves to be above “humanity”, as they are individuals created artificially through alchemy, and thus have enhanced capabilities beyond human capacity。 Despite this, their entire nature is contradictory: they`ve been created to carry the seven deadly sins, yet they constantly look down upon humans, who, despite carrying some of the said sins themselves, also show the potential to overcome them。 This story is thus also about accepting such flaws as a fundamental part of humanity, and learning to help others through this understanding。 This is also linked with the discussions about the nature of truth itself, which is the “God” of this fictional world。 The Truth`s message is about appreciating the interconnectedness of life, accepting the limits of what a single individual can do, and aspiring to do better within those limits without denying the real nature of oneself and thus humanity。 At least, this is only my interpretation。 Because Arakawa lets her readers find their own answers to the philosophical questions she asks, which proves her as an artist who is the master of her craft。Honestly, the only reason this is not studied and analyzed more often despite showing more nuance and depth than some of the so-called “classics” is because manga as a medium is not taken seriously due to intellectual snobbery, and Arakawa is not a Western artist。 I don`t know whether this review will inspire anyone to give Fullmetal Alchemist, or manga as a medium in general, a chance, but I`m just here to express my love for this series。 So thanks for reading if you`ve made it to the end! 。。。more

This was an unexpectedly fantastic experience, and I'm in the process of reliving this story by watching the anime (Brotherhood), which I'm also loving。 I'm glad I pushed myself to try something new and I'm glad I chose this series specifically。 If like me you're new to comics and manga and would like to try it out, Fullmetal Alchemist is a perfect place to start。 。。。more

I believe anyone who's had any literature conversation with me has heard me ramble on and on and on about this manga/anime。 I rarely give books and media 5 stars and when I do, it means that this story has somehow changed my perception of the world, of life, and of everything I had known up until that point where I found it。And I have to say, not many books or manga or media or whatever have influenced me in my 28 years as much as Fullmetal Alchemist (if we're talking series, then Brotherhood) h I believe anyone who's had any literature conversation with me has heard me ramble on and on and on about this manga/anime。 I rarely give books and media 5 stars and when I do, it means that this story has somehow changed my perception of the world, of life, and of everything I had known up until that point where I found it。And I have to say, not many books or manga or media or whatever have influenced me in my 28 years as much as Fullmetal Alchemist (if we're talking series, then Brotherhood) have。FMA is a masterpiece。 It is a story that makes you cry and laugh and question your perspectives and opinions more than once in a not so long span of time。SettingThe world of FMA is a steampunk-like Victorian-inspired universe where Alchemy is a a mesh and merge between science and magic。 Only the most skilled of the world are able to become Alchemists - but by no means does it mean that non-Alchemists are not strong, if not stronger in some instances than Alchemists (Bradley, Mira, and Hawkeye are just a sample)。 That world has suffered because of Alchemy for ages, it has gone through major wars among neighboring countries, and has left a huge scar on the land and a rift between it's war-torn and disaster-stricken nations。PlotlineThe plot follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, Alchemists and sons of a great Alchemist。 Their father abandons their family when they were toddlers and their mother dies while they are children。 This leads Edu and Alu to breach the laws of Alchemy and perform the taboo of human transmutation - trying to resurrect and recreate their mother。 In the process, they are struck by a greater disaster - Edu loses an arm and Alu loses his whole body。。。 and instead of their mother, they recreate/bring back a distorted monstrosity that instantly dies again。 Traumatize by the loss of his brother and the guilt of bringing back his mother so disfigured and killing her again (or so he thinks), Edu yet again performs Alchemy to bring back his brother Alu's soul, binding it to a suit of armor, and losing his leg in this process。 From there on, they are left alone in the world, trying to find a way to bring back their lost limbs (and Alu's whole body) and in the process discovering bigger and much worse evils that have taken hold of the land。The best part of the plot, I think, is the feeling that stays with you long after you're done with the story and have moved on。 It stays in your head, the complexity of the plot, the political intricacies, the effort and design that went into making each and every character matter to the story。 And every plot twist is as unforeseen as rain in August。CharactersThis manga has some of the most lovable and relatable characters ever created。 Even the Sins bring out the humane in you and either demand your love or your respect or your reverence。Seriously if I were to write my opinions and feelings about every character, I would not be done, because every single one is beautifully made。 The brothers, Hohenheim, Roy Mustang and Armstrong, Scar and King Bradley, and seriously even Greed and Envy!!So I'm just not going to do it instead, here are some。。。Marvelous Tear Jerking Moments minus any spoilers。Nina chimera。 (I choke to this day)Envy's death。The transmutation scene。King Bradley。。。Greed and Ling Yao。Scar and Winry's relation。。。Maes Hughes - and then Roy Mustang's reaction。The ending and what happens with Edu。 。。。more

Placeholder entry for the entire series。One of (if not THE best) series I've ever read。 A well-plotted series that doesn't fall into traps that other shonen fall into, extremely detailed and interesting side characters, and extremely gripping while also being funny at times。 There's more than two dozen memorable characters, each complete with goals, motivation, and always something to do。 Also, short jokes。I don't have enough words to cover the praise。 Sometimes the hype train is warranted。 Placeholder entry for the entire series。One of (if not THE best) series I've ever read。 A well-plotted series that doesn't fall into traps that other shonen fall into, extremely detailed and interesting side characters, and extremely gripping while also being funny at times。 There's more than two dozen memorable characters, each complete with goals, motivation, and always something to do。 Also, short jokes。I don't have enough words to cover the praise。 Sometimes the hype train is warranted。 。。。more

his soul placed in a hollow suit of armor that can't feel the touch of others。 As neither of them sacrificed their lives in their entirety, the exchange failed and the boys created an abomination in place of their dead mother。After burning their own home down and dealing with the abomination they created, Edward and his brother enlist themselves in the military to atone for their sins and learn more about the many secrets of alchemy; potentially learning how to recover their original bodies in the process。 While serving in the military, the brothers begin to realize how the wonders of alchemy can be abused for nefarious purposes。 Immortal life can be gained by sacrificing hundreds of innocents souls, wars can be staged and foreign nations can be annihilated under false charges, human experimentation aided by alchemy can lead to unnatural mutations, the world of alchemy is more dark and dangerous than either of them could've bargained for。Fullmetal Alchemist grew on me the longer I read it。 When I first started reading, it seemed like it was going to be generic shounen material, but it gets deeper and darker the further it goes on。 The way it handles political and religious corruption, the dangers of advanced states abusing their technology and resources at the expense of foreign nations caught in the turmoil, and the sad futility of revenge are all very well done。The characters all bear the weight of what alchemy is capable of。 Edward and Alphonse carry the burden of abusing alchemy for selfish purposes。 Their master Izumi loses her womb after attempting to resurrect her dead child。 Scar takes many lives after his entire country is desecrated and gets trapped in a pointless cycle of revenge。 Roy and Riza endure the regret of committing brutal war crimes for the sake of protecting their own nation。 Alchemy creates and destroys in equal measure and no one is free from the consequences of tipping the balance。The fight scenes are flashy and exciting without being too over-the-top because of the dangerous limitations that alchemy involves。 The law of equivalent exchange keeps the power scaling in check and adds plenty of tension to the action。 The female characters are especially well done, all of them are strong and unique in their own way。 The lead heroine Winry being a skilled mechanic, Riza being an honorable warrior of the military, Olivier Armstrong as cold and vicious as the snowy fortress she guards, and that's just a few of them。The villains are an interesting parody of the seven deadly sins。 Each of them represent the darkness and regrets of each of the main characters and they can only be conquered by coming to terms with their own flaws and sins。 The characters having to overcome their personal demons to take on the greater demons trying to overthrow the world from the shadows made the struggles of every single person in the story feel personal。 Every character, no matter how minor had their moments to shine。 Everyone had a vital role to play and the camaraderie between friend and foe alike never felt cheesy of forced。Unlike most shounen series I've read, the final arc was my favorite。 A lot of long-running shounen series have a habit of being dragged out, losing touch with what made them great or breaking their own rules in messy, plot-hole-filled final arcs that leave a lot to be desired。 Fullmetal Alchemist has no lose ends, all characters have complete arcs where they learn and grow from their dark pasts, the romance and comedy are handled well without relying on cheap fanservice, the action scenes are great but they don't overshadow the plot and the final chapters tie everything together beautifully。 It's not my favorite manga by any means as I usually tend to favor seinen, but it's definitely one of the greatest stories to ever come out of the shounen demographic in my opinion。 The ending is a tearjerker but it left me in good spirits。***My Social MediaMy Instagram Account: https://www。instagram。com/michael_sor。。。My YouTube Channel: https://www。youtube。com/channel/UCPPs。。。My Wattpad Account: https://www。wattpad。com/user/Michael-。。。My Twitter Account: https://twitter。com/SorbelloHorrorMy Facebook Account: https://www。facebook。com/michael。sorb。。。 。。。more

9/10 for the ENTIRE series。So fantastic! Great ending with a perfect cast of characters, crazy politics and awesome fights。 A little stretched at times, could’ve used one or two less volumes。 A certain conflict at the end felt too long for me。 But amazing nonetheless! Perhaps the best ending in all of manga?
